ABOUT
US
The Coffee House Concerts Series started officially in 2004 but the idea and spirit behind it were brewing for several years before that, in the heads and hearts of a group of parishioners and staffers at Church of the Holy Communion, an Episcopal Church in the center of Memphis.
The idea was simple - create a comfortable, smoke-free venue in which folks who love to listen to good music in a community setting could experience the finest folk, Americana, and blues artists around.
The series was created and carried out as a part of the church's mission, providing a place where
anyone could feel welcome. It became a place to come with
friends and to meet new friends in a safe, non-smoking environment....a place
to enjoy a really good cup of coffee, a glass of wine, a snack or dessert and
some extraordinarily-talented acoustic musicians and singers.
During the span of the series, we hosted a big handful of some of the finest talent out there - high points have to include Bruce Cockburn, Jesse Winchester and Janis Ian, but the depth of fabulous music was seemingly endless. You can read about and check out photos from our past shows here and on the archive pages linked there.
We are proud that we were able to regularly give some of our proceeds to Heifer International. You can read more about Heifer here.
As
a project of Holy Communion, the series was a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. Unfortunately, after four years we realized the series couldn't support itself on ticket sales alone, there's no money in the church budget for it, and we can't accept any support from outside the church. Our last show was a quadruple bill featuring area singer-songwriters Blair Combest, Cory Branan, Jimmy Davis and Keith Sykes.
