WE
SUPPORT HEIFER INTERNATIONAL At
the end of our first season, we spent some time trying to think of how it could
have been better. The music was fantastic, the food and drink divine, the sound
got better as we tweaked the equipment throughout the series. Everyone seemed
to enjoy themselves immensely. Remember the lightning against the darkened sky
outside the big picture window behind Chris Smither as he sang Bob Dylan's "Desolation
Row"? Memorable evenings, every single one. Could
they be better? What if we could come hear a great musician, spend time with friends,
enjoy the coffeehouse environment, and do good for others? What if there were
a way to make an evening like this more than just about enjoying ourselves? Although
the Coffee House Concerts Series is run as a non-profit organization, we've been
fortunate enough after some concerts to have a little money left over. It usually
goes toward preparing for the next show, stocking up on supplies, keeping the
equipment in good shape, etc. We've decided that we'd like to make this monetary
surplus go farther than the walls of Church of the Holy Communion, so we've decided
to give some of it away. Whenever
we have leftover money from any of these concerts, we've decided to give a portion
of it to Heifer International. While there are many, many worthwhile groups that
deserve support, we identified with Heifer International in part because so many
of the musicians in our little part of the world support it. It's quite common
to find Heifer mentioned on the websites of many, many of today's popular folk
and blues artists. If
you don't know about Heifer International, you can visit their website at: http://www.heifer.org
In a nutshell, Heifer provides livestock to needy families, and teaches them how
to profit from it. If they give a family a cow, they teach them how to care
for it, use the milk to feed themselves, sell the surplus milk for income, and
how to breed it to make more cows! A Heifer recipient promises to give the first
offspring of their cow to another needy family, thereby continuing the cycle.
And Heifer animals aren't just limited to cattle. Donations to Heifer can be specified
to purchase goats, chickens, honeybees, llamas, water buffalo, and any number
of other animals. You can even purchase an entire ark if you wish! There's
obviously more to it than this, so please visit the Heifer website, and consider
supporting them yourself! You can know that the price of your admission to our
concerts truly does help others around the world in a tremendous way! We look
forward to seeing you at the next concert. |
